The Licking County Sheriff’s Office is building an ongoing eligibility list for Reserve Deputy Sheriff. Testing for this position is administered through National Testing Network (NTN).

Salary Information: After completion of the agency’s Patrol Division Field Training Program, Reserve units may have the opportunity to be compensated for hours worked on an as needed basis.

Special Duty Compensation: Reserve Deputy may participate in Special Duty assignments authorized by the agency at the agency’s contracted compensation rate.

Department Overview: The Licking County Sheriff’s Office is a 24 hour, full-service agency serving the citizens of our central Ohio community.

The agency is led by Sheriff Randy Thorp, who was elected by the community we serve in 2004. The agency has five divisions: Patrol Division, Jail Division, Civil Division, Detective Division and Community Services Division. The agency currently employees 92 full-time sworn and 96 non-sworn/civilian staff.

As a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with the agency, you will be given the opportunity to work with some of the finest Law Enforcement Officers in Central Ohio. Reserve Deputies are permitted to become “Patrol certified” and work as a “part-time” paid Deputy protecting the citizens of Licking County, assist the Detective Division during certain situations, assist the Community Services Division with public relations events or serve civil process papers on behalf of the courts. Reserve Deputies are also permitted to take special duty assignments at area events, conducting traffic control or working uniformed security at area businesses and concerts. If assigned to a special duty job, compensation is paid at the agency’s current contracted rate.

If appointed by the agency as a Reserve Deputy, preference to those wishing to hold full-time positions will be given consideration as the full time positions become available.

Area Information: Licking County is situated in central Ohio just east of the state capital of Columbus along the I-70 corridor. Our community is home to Denison University, The Ohio State University-Newark Campus, Central Ohio Technical College and Mt. Vernon Nazarene University- Newark Campus. The area offers many quality public schools such as Newark City, Heath City, Granville Village Exempted, Licking Valley and Watkins Memorial, all of which are strong in academics and athletics.

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes

Vision: Correctible to 20/40; no color or night blindness

Academy Certification: Yes

 

Necessary Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission Basic Peace Officer Training Academy certification

Schooling Prior and Post Hiring:

  • Must complete annual agency in-service training required by federal, state and local laws and agency accrediting bodies.
  • Must successfully certify on 40 caliber handgun and 12 gauge shotgun annually.

Annual Reserve Hour Requirements:

Must work a minimum of 96 hours per year with no compensation. In order to be eligible for any compensated assignments, must have worked or be on pace to work the required non-compensated hours.

  1. Successfully pass (70% minimum) the National Testing Network Law Enforcement Officer Test and complete NTN Personal History Questionnaire
  2. Complete an agency application for employment
  3. Pass the agency’s physical abilities test
  4. Initial Background Investigation (including, Criminal History, Driving Record and Credit Check)
  5. Panel/Oral board Interview
  6. Complete background investigation
  7. Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) truth verification examination
  8. Final Interview
  9. If conditional offer is extended:
  • Complete a physical examination and drug screening
  • Complete a psychological evaluation
  • Firearms Qualification.
